The Patent Pink Heel Workout

Lately I've been on a high heel binge.  I'm in love with gladiators and statement heels that really do make an outfit.  My fave heel at the moment is Nine West's Valenka with the two toned leather and strap and buckle details.  Normally I reserve heels for special occaisions but lately the lure of sexy footwear has been too great and I've gone from flats to heels all day.  Not just kitten or mid but a minimum of 4 inches and a max of 5.5 inches (Sportsgirl plaforms which are surprisingly comfortable).  In order to survive a whole day at this height I've devised my own fitness regimen to ensure I don't walk crippled at the end of the day.  Try it if you're game and up for the challenge!  This one's not for shy types as people may perceive you as the crazy lady who works out in heels.
The Patent Pink Heel Workout involves working out in your high heels.  Each gym workout session begins with a 10-20 minutes (depending on how long you can last in heels on the treadmill) of walking at 3-3.5 mph at an incline of 0.5%.  This activity (I have found) helps to strengthen and elongate calves and plantar faciitis, improves posture and engages the abdominals.  The reason this occurs can be attributed to maintaining even weight distrubution and balance while walking.  When undertaking this activity select a comfortable pair of heels and hold onto the treadmill's straps or bars to keep your balance.   Engage your deep abdominals by sucking your belly button towards your spine to hold and support your body upright. drop your shoulders back, and keep your shoulders, knees and toes aligned  As you proceed during the workout you should not feel uncomfortable.  If you do, focus on correcting the alignment of your knees and toes.  You will find after doing the workout a few times you won't need to hold onto anything and your strides get stronger.

During the week I also incorporate cardiolates/pilates reformer to strengthen my abs and spine too.  I found these sessions improve overall posture and gait.
L-R: Sportsgirl platforms, Nine West Emmanuele, Botique 9 Valenka, and Nine West Kentaro

I love it!! Do you get trainers yelling at you for not wearing sneakers on the machines, though? lol This "patent pink heel workout" really intrigues me. Maybe this is just the way to get me back to the gym!

I love your taste in heels, too! I think we're going to need to go shoe shopping together sometime! Oh, and those pink patent pumps are definitely NW ;-)

I'm smiling and shaking my head Nance. I can't believe you wear heels when you workout at the gym. I'm not game to try that at my gym though. The trainers will have a fit!

Hot shoes though! Good to hear you are now a heel wearing pro.

No trainers have yelled at me yet. It's surprising as there are classes at some of the gyms that have high heel classes. I'm not paying $30 to do those classes when I can do them in our building's gym for free ;D
