You don't need to fork out serious coin to get a decent mascara. Ever since I started using the stuff I've tried and tested a lot that have ranged from $2 - $70. Most of the time the mascaras that have performed really well were priced $24 USD/$50AU and below. A fair chunk of them have been drugstore brands such as Rimmel, Covergirl, Maybelline and L'Oreal. (Picture Credit: New York Times). This week's drugstore find is L'Oreal's Telescopic Exploision Mascara ($9.00) and here's why.
On the brush
The brush is very similar to Givency's Phenomen' Eyes mascara. The brush is designed to reach those ever so hard to reach lashes to define and build them up. A rather unconventional design, using the brush takes a little familiarity to achieve beautiful and defined lashes. It took me about three attempts. The ball shape surprisingly prevents clumps and mascara mishaps that sometimes occur with the traditional brushes.
On the formula
As can be seen above the formula is richly pigmented and has a lot of body. Once applied to lashes it is thick enough to build a little volume after two coats, while after a single coat it defines lashes cleanly.
In terms of wear, the mascara lasts all day and didn't smudge, smear, flake or irritate my eyes as a contact lense wearer. I was pretty surprised with it's wearability during a recent long distance run and gym workout.
What it's meant to do
The mascara claims to define and lengthen lashes with a combination of the ball applicator and formula. As can be seen Telescopic did a fantastic job giving my wimpy pin straight lashes some body and definition.
Pigmentation wise the mascara is a rich black color that stood out against my skin and eyes in both front and side views.
In terms of lengthening and defining, Telescopic did a fantastic job doing both without the clumps. On the other hand when it came to volume, it didn't do a really great job as I needed more than two coats to achieve fat lashes (see right picture). Note this is probably going to differ between users depending on lash types and condition.
Another great thing about Telescopic and L'Oreal mascaras in general is they're really easy to remove at the end of the day. For me, the challenge is finding a mascara that removes cleanly by washing my face. Telescopic was easy to remove with warm water and a facial cleanser ,such as a face soap/cleansing cream, and didn't leave a black ring of residue the morning after.
Overall
Telescopic fulfilled its claims really well as can be seen above. The only thing I didn't like about Telescopic is that you can't apply it in a hurry because of the applicator.
